Using a Digital Still Camera

After the successful camcorder experiment, I decided to try for an image of the Moon using my Olympus D-340R digital camera. This photo of the first quarter Moon was taken at about 1:00 UT on June 10, 2000 by handholding the camera in front of the eyepiece of my telescope. I used the 25mm SMA rather than the 32mm Plössl that I'd used with the camcorder, and except for turning off the flash, I let the camera do what it wanted.

The raw image was 1280 x 960. I've flipped and rotated it so that it matches the Moon's naked-eye orientation. It's also been cropped, slightly reduced, gamma corrected (because the original was a little overexposed) and lightly sharpened. Based on how well this went, I'm tempted to buy or make a camera mount like the one here and experiment with higher-power eyepieces.
