Simulations of the Sky

Although I'd like to do more of it someday, I don't currently do much astrophotography. But I've applied my 3D animation background to simulations of the night sky that are nice to look at when it's cloudy.

I've written a LightWave 3D plug-in that renders the million or so stars in the Tycho catalog. 99% of these stars are too dim to see with the naked eye individually, but taken together they form the faint cloud-like appearance of the Milky Way, which is especially prominent in Sagittarius.

With the plug-in, the Euler angles used to orient LightWave's virtual camera become topocentric altitude and azimuth. Given a time and location on the Earth, I can render a view of the night sky in any direction.
