Christmas Eclipse
December 26, 2000

The entire extended family was out on the deck yesterday watching the partial eclipse of the sun. We shared the view through two telescopes, two pairs of eclipse sunglasses, and a makeshift pinhole camera made with two blank pieces of paper. We also brought the pinhole indoors and projected the sun onto the wall and the white furniture in my son's south-facing bedroom.

The only thing a little sad about this is that none of my neighbors even ventured outside. Oh well. The subject for a future essay. At least it made an impression on my soon-to-be-8 daughter.

She made this picture on a computer at school. The original was in color, but the school's printer is black-and-white. While that fits with the itn color scheme, you'll just have to imagine the festive holiday colors of the letters, the holly and the candy, and the deep orange color of the sun.
